RVNGMX7: PURPLE BRAIN

The fine folks over at RVNG will be releasing the seventh edition to their mix series this week, a release that features the duo of Bumrocks (we miss u) and Jasons Evans of Hey Convict!. The CD is accompanied by a 7" that includes a pair of cosmic edits from the mix. Don't forget to preorder on May 26th at igetrvng.com! Here's the Purple Brain edit of Barry Devorzon & Perry Botkin Jr.'s The Riot. Loving these drums.

IN FLAGRANTI

The fine folks over at RVNG have just released the latest in their RVNG of the NRDS series, and #8 is from NYC freak-disco duo In Flagranti. The source material for these edits is pretty rock-oriented, something I'm definitely into. Here's the first track off the 12", credited to "Aural Yaw" but we can all recognize that sweet glam rock guitar riff....

Download: Aural Yaw (In Flagranti) - Send (192 KBPS)

And don't forget to head over to RVNG and pick up the 12" (while they last!) if you like what you hear.

Egg Hunt

New blog! Someone over at the hollerboard requested this a while back so I dug it up and remembered how awesome it is. The sole single by Egg Hunt on Dischord.

In the spring of 1986 Dischord founders Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson (both formerly of Minor Threat) went to England to visit, and were invited by Southern Records founder John Loader to do some recording while they were there. Southern was operated out of a row house in a neighborhood called Wood Green, and John had a 24-track studio set up in the garage. They recorded four songs, including "Me and You", something that the two had been playing together in the basement for many years, and "We All Fall Down", which was written by Ian for Embrace, but had been passed on by the band. Having had such a good time recording and hanging out in London, Ian and Jeff decided to release a single to mark the occasion. The name was chosen since it was recorded over Easter weekend. That summer they tried forming a new band called Egg Hunt with ex-members of Gray Matter, but it wasn't meant to be. The Southern session would turn out to be the last time the two would record music together.

BONUS: for the dance heads, here's EMYND's Think-Sampling, synth-infused disco edit of the Fugazi classic Long Division. What ian MacKye had to say:
